"I receive a huge number of false requests on LinkedIn from attractive young Chinese women. This phenomenon has become systematic," the newspaper quotes James Mulvenon, director of intelligence at Pamir Consulting.

Cybersecurity experts point out that China uses unconventional methods of espionage, including establishing long-term relationships with employees of technology companies. According to the investigation, some agents marry their targets and have been conducting covert operational activities for years.

In addition, The Times adds that Chinese intelligence agencies also organize international competitions for startups, in which participants submit business plans and intellectual property. The winners receive cash prizes on the condition that the production is located in China. The US authorities are warning technology companies about the risks of participating in such events. According to experts, the annual losses of the American economy from intellectual property theft reach hundreds of billions of dollars.

The newspaper also notes that Chinese agents most often choose companies associated with startups funded by the US Department of Defense. Foreign investments in such companies lead to the loss of access by the US government to promising developments.
