The European Union (EU) does not possess effective weapons for destroying unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and therefore needs to create a "Drone Wall". This was announced on October 24 by the European Commissioner for Defense, Andrius Kubilius.

"We (the EU - Ed.) do not have enough capabilities to detect drones. And even if we figure them out, we don't have cost—effective ways to destroy them," he said in an interview with Bloomberg TV.

The European Commissioner also noted that it is necessary to improve the detection of devices, for example, using acoustic sensors. According to him, Latvia is currently working on their creation.

In addition, Kubilius proposed the introduction of modern radars that will be able to detect the drone.

On September 19, Norbert Roettgen, a deputy from the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), a member of the ruling coalition of Germany, announced the need to create a "wall of drones" along the entire eastern border of NATO. At the same time, Roettgen does not support the idea of fighting drones in Ukrainian airspace, as this would mean using NATO weapons outside the bloc's territory.

On October 3, it became known that at the summit of the European Political Community in Copenhagen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sharply criticized the financing of the Drone Walls project from EU funds. Kubilius, in turn, supported the initiative, noting that the project was estimated at €1 billion and its creation could be completed in less than a year.
