On October 24, Ilya Ilyin, head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Thailand, in an interview with Izvestia, revealed details of operations to rescue Russians held in slave conditions in fraudulent call centers in Myanmar.

According to him, in 2025, with the direct participation of the Russian Embassy, four Russians were rescued from such centers.

"This can essentially be called slavery. <...> The task was to breed, to put pressure on the pity of some compassionate people there, in North America, in Europe, and in this way to lure out a lot of money," he said.

As the diplomat explained, the rescue mechanism included coordination with Thai law enforcement agencies and the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok. After receiving a signal about a missing person and confirming the information, the Myanmar military extracted people from the so—called "parks" - closed complexes with barbed wire and machine gun towers.

According to the diplomat, the illusion of a full-fledged life was created in the call centers with restaurants, spas, casinos and even brothels, but leaving the territory was strictly prohibited. Victims of fraud who were imprisoned in such "parks" had financial plans that they had to close in order to avoid beatings.

"People were forced to work: they had a financial plan to achieve certain financial targets within a month. <...> Sometimes financial plans reached <...> $1 million per month — they had to earn. Then you could expect a salary of $5-7 thousand per month, and at least you weren't beaten. And so they could beat you if you were either lazy or did not reach some set targets," Ilyin shared.

Ilyin personally traveled to the border town of Mae Sot, where he picked up the released Russians in the presence of military and Thai immigration authorities. Then they were taken to Bangkok airport for departure to Russia. The special status received by the rescued in Thailand allowed them to avoid deportation measures — they were recognized as victims of human trafficking.

On October 13, Ilyin reported on the detention of several Russians in a fraudulent call center on the border of Myanmar and Thailand. The organizers of call centers lured Russians into slavery by offering them careers as models or advertising agents.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko said on October 23 that several Russians who were held in Myanmar had been released and were in Russia. Then he thanked the official authorities of Myanmar and Thailand for the active assistance shown in resolving this issue.
