Moscow positively assessed Tokyo's readiness to sign a peace treaty with Russia, but pointed out the contradictory position of the Japanese side. The corresponding statement was made on October 24 by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

"The statement is welcome. We are supporters of the peace treaty, but we have to admit that Japan has supported an unfriendly position towards the Russian Federation and joined the illegal sanctions," he said during a briefing.
