- The media reported on Germany's request to the United States to ease sanctions on Rosneft subsidiaries
The German government has asked the United States to ease sanctions against subsidiaries of the Russian oil company Rosneft located on German territory. This was reported on October 24 by the Financial Times newspaper.
It is specified that we are talking about three oil refineries, including the strategically important Raffinerie Schwedt refinery in Schwedt, located on the Druzhba oil pipeline.
The United Kingdom, which had previously imposed sanctions on Russian companies, agreed to make an exception for Germany because subsidiaries have already been separated from the main one. Maintaining the possibility of buying Russian oil is an important aspect for Germany, which is trying to bring its economy out of stagnation due to expensive energy resources.
In early 2022, Germany had to nationalize three Rosneft plants and transfer them to the custody of the country's federal energy agency Bundesnetzagentur (BNA) to protect them from the pan-European embargo on Russian oil. However, now there is a difficult situation for the German government: there is no resource to independently invest in refineries and develop them, and Rosneft is not interested in selling its part of the shares.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced on October 23 that a German-controlled but Russian-owned division of Rosneft could be excluded from the US sanctions list. He noted that this company is a key supplier of oil to German gas stations and major airports.
