- The media reported a financial hole of 2.6 billion pounds in the budget of the Ministry of Defense of England
The UK Ministry of Defence is facing a financial hole of more than £2.6 billion in 2025. This was reported on October 23 by The Telegraph newspaper after studying the relevant documents.
"The [financial] report states that the ministry will have to spend £1.6 billion more on day—to-day expenses and £1 billion more on capital investments than was agreed with Chancellor Rachel Reeves," the publication says.
Due to the increase in inflation, defense spending has increased accordingly, however, according to experts, this is not the only reason. The gradual increase in spending on long-term projects of the Ministry of Defense, for example, on updating the nuclear arsenal, also plays an important role in this issue.
Currently, spending on the army accounts for about 2.3% of the country's GDP, but British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said in February that this figure would grow by 0.2% by 2027. According to experts, it will grow to 3% by 2030, and to 3.5% by 2035.
The British Labour Party, to which Starmer belongs, insists on budget savings, which causes a mixed reaction. James Cartlidge, the Minister of Defense Procurement, a member of the Tory Party, is extremely negative about this position: in his opinion, in this political situation, it is necessary to increase the country's military power, not to save.
The average estimate of losses of British companies due to the withdrawal or reduction of their presence in the Russian Federation amounted to about $69.8 billion, analysts at the MGIMO Institute of International Studies of the Russian Foreign Ministry estimated. The text of the report appeared at the disposal of Izvestia on September 29. The total range of estimated losses of 99 British companies ranged from $57.5 billion to $77.2 billion.
