A military expert assessed Sweden's ability to supply 150 fighter jets to Ukraine
Sweden will not be able to pay for and supply Ukraine with 150 Jas 39 Gripen E fighters, as there are insufficient resources for this. This was stated by military expert, captain of the first rank of the reserve Vasily Dandykin on Thursday, October 23.
"150 fighters is 50 more than there are in the Swedish Air Force (VVS) itself. In addition, each fighter is very expensive, there are huge sums involved. And the Swedes won't find that kind of money. So statements about supply plans are just an attempt to portray fervent support for Ukraine," Dandykin said in a conversation with Lenta.Ru .
The expert noted that Sweden will be able to transfer the first fighter to Kiev only after three years, when it will no longer be relevant.
Earlier in the day, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said that Sweden was considering the possibility of supplying Ukraine with up to 150 Gripen fighter jets at the expense of frozen Russian assets, Moscow 24 writes.
On the same day, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky met with Kristersson in the Swedish city of Linkoping, RT reports. At the press conference, Kiev's intention to buy Gripen was discussed, after which the parties signed an agreement.
The JAS 39 Gripen E is the latest version of the Swedish fighter developed by SAAV. The special feature of the model is a more powerful engine compared to previous models, as well as a longer flight range, improved radar and electronics.
On September 30, the Swedish Ministry of Defense denied Ukraine's claim to supply Gripen fighter jets. They added that Stockholm is only considering the possibility of delivery.
In 2024, Sweden suspended plans to send its Gripen fighter jets to Ukraine after partner countries decided to supply American F-16s.
