The expert spoke about the requirements for engine oil in winter
With the onset of cold weather, it is especially important that the engine oil remains fluid and provides an easy engine start. Pavel Bakharev, senior technical expert at Sintec Lubricants, told Rossiyskaya Gazeta about this on October 23.
If the oil thickens, it becomes more difficult for the starter to turn the crankshaft, and the lubrication of the assemblies is delayed, which accelerates wear, the expert noted.
Therefore, the main indicator of the oil's winter suitability is its SAE viscosity grade, Pavel Bakharev said. For cold climates, he advises choosing oils labeled 5W or 0W. The smaller the number before the "W", the easier the oil is pumped at subzero temperatures. Thus, SAE 0W remains liquid even in frosts below -35 °C, while 5W is calculated up to about -30 °C.
An important parameter is the content of base oils of the IV group. Due to the use of polyalphaolefins (PAO), engine oils have a high limit of "thermal strength" both in the cold season and at high temperatures.
It is equally important to make sure that the oil is original, noted Bakharev. Counterfeit products often do not meet the stated characteristics and may lose their fluidity even with a slight disadvantage. Moreover, counterfeit products should be understood not only as outright forgery, but also oils from "warm" countries, which have a significant difference in such indicators as CCS (crankability) and MRV (pumpability), the expert noted.
Earlier, Megamarket analysts reported an increase in the average receipt for a new set of winter tires. In the period from August to the first half of October, it increased by almost 24% compared to last year. Tires remain the most expensive item of expenditure when preparing a car for winter, analysts said. The average receipt for a new set was 35,527 rubles.
