Residents of the Balkans are actively participating as volunteers in a special military operation (SVO), and the number of people willing to fight on the side of the Russian army continues to grow. This opinion was expressed on October 23 by a Serbian sniper, a participant in the fighting in Donbass, Dejan Beric.

"I can't talk about the number of volunteers, I don't have the right, but there are enough of them. People continue to come to this day. The desire to come is growing more and more, and I'm talking not only about the Serbs, but also about other Balkan republics," Beric told TASS, adding that the volunteers study Russian for several months before signing the contract to make it easier to interact with their colleagues.

According to the soldier, the new volunteers are mostly young people without combat experience, as veterans of the Yugoslav wars arrived in the first ranks. For most Serbs, these volunteers are heroes.

"These people come for two reasons: to repay their debt to Mother Russia and to become real men. In our country, if you haven't served in the army, you can't get married, they look at you askance. The people still have an understanding of the army," he concluded.

Dejan Beric (Deki) from Serbia was in Donbass as a volunteer. In April 2023, he told reporters that Ukrainian militants were using prohibited methods of warfare, and the Kiev regime's ideology was based on bullying Russians.

"They say that one is not a warrior in the field. But it turns out to be a warrior!"

Earlier, on August 28, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin announced that the Russian government had prepared a draft on granting veteran status to volunteers who had signed an agreement with the RF Ministry of Defense from October 2022 to September 2023. He also stressed that the volunteers performed important tasks, showed courage and heroism, and therefore each of them will have the opportunity to obtain the status of a veteran or a disabled combatant.
