Brazil and Russia are discussing joint projects for the extraction of rare earth metals in the Latin American country. This was announced to Izvestia on October 23 by Alexey Likhachev, General Director of Rosatom State Corporation.

"There is such a story (possible joint extraction of rare earths from Russia and Brazil. The Brazilian Mining minister initiated this discussion. There are different estimates of Brazil's potential in terms of rare earth metals and uranium deposits, among others. The work is being carried out at the initial level," Likhachev said.

He also noted that with the current leadership of Brazil, the state corporation is extremely comfortable organizing joint projects. Issues related to mining are among the top issues of Rosatom State Corporation's work with this country.

It is worth noting that Brazil ranks second in the world in terms of reserves of rare earth metals. Its reserves are estimated at 21 million tons. The legislation of the state allows foreign companies to participate in their production.

On August 11, it was reported that Brazil and Russia, amid threats from the United States to impose secondary sanctions against Rio de Janeiro for continuing trade interactions with Moscow, signed a memorandum on strengthening economic cooperation. It is specified that this document should contribute to the establishment of a regular bilateral dialogue between states in the fields of macroeconomic policy, economic issues, tax cooperation, financing of various infrastructures, as well as strengthening multilateral cooperation within the framework of BRICS and G20.
