The media reported a massive outbreak of diarrhea among Russian schoolchildren after tasting a Chinese trending product — spicy soy meat "latyao". Varvara Veretyuk, a gastroenterologist, internist, and nutritionist at Invitro, told Izvestia on October 23 about why the children's stomach was not ready for such a test and how Chinese and Korean food affects health.

"Latiao itself is a product of deep processing. It can be attributed to fast food or snacks — that is, at best it is processed soy meat, but often such a product does not even contain soy, but uses wheat protein, gluten, which is processed with oils, spices, salt and glutamate," the specialist noted.

Taken together, it has a very bright spicy taste that is very popular with children and teenagers, but it is not good for their gastrointestinal tract. In children and even adults, it can cause discomfort, bloating, and loose stools. And in adults, in addition to this set, they also increase blood pressure and increase puffiness, Veretyuk warned.

Snacks contain excessive amounts of salt, food additives, flavor enhancers, preservatives, and oils. This can cause not only pathogenic and unpleasant symptoms, but also adversely affects health.

The doctor said that in some provinces of China, latyao was banned from being sold at a distance of 200-500 m from schools and campuses in order to guarantee healthy nutrition for children and adolescents.

"We should also learn from the experience of our foreign colleagues. As for the possible low-quality latao, it would be suspicious if several children with different gastrointestinal tract sensitivities tried a snack and all went to the hospital at once with abdominal pain and diarrhea. In this scenario, it is worth excluding infected, low—quality medicinal products," the doctor said.

According to her, such cases have been described in China, Indonesia, and some other countries where latiao is actively sold and consumed. There, pathogenic bacteria are found in the product, which cause symptoms of food poisoning and even recall the product in whole batches.

All snacks that contain excess salt adversely affect the gastrointestinal mucosa and increase the risk of food infections.

"The problem with latyao and other snacks — Chinese, Korean, and our production — is not the amount of spicy seasonings, but the excess amount of salt, fat, and added sugar," she concluded.

On July 4, Izvestia reviewed a study by Röndell, which reported that Russians began to abandon food delivery in favor of self-cooking. According to the survey, 35% of respondents noted that they have recently become more likely to cook at home, and 20% try to visit catering establishments less often.
