On October 22, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reacted to Latvia's refusal to provide its airspace to Russian President Vladimir Putin's plane for a possible meeting with White House Chief of Staff Donald Trump in Hungary, saying that Riga's current policy towards Moscow was motivated by a desire for revenge for the defeat of Latvian collaborators by Soviet troops.

"The hatred of Russia in the current regime in Riga is determined by the desire to take revenge for the defeat of Latvian collaboration by Soviet troops," she wrote on the Telegram channel.

Zakharova also presented a "historical background", claiming that the indigenous population of Latvia played a key role in the extermination of 89% of Jews during the Great Patriotic War. She added that Latvian nationalists, in her opinion, committed brutal reprisals against fellow citizens even before the arrival of the Nazis, and today Riga honors the participants of the Holocaust as fighters for independence by holding "legionnaires' marches" and thus reviewing the results of the Second World War.

Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said on October 20 that Sofia was ready to provide an air corridor for Putin's plane on its way to Budapest. Georgiev noted that the meeting would not be able to take place if one of its participants failed to attend it.
