Digital traces of cybercriminals remain in the information space, which serve as the key to uncovering their criminal schemes. Sargis Shmavonian, an expert at Cyberprotect, told Izvestia about this.

"Digital footprints are not random data, but modern evidence of the virtual world. In fraud, these are phone numbers, bank details, phishing sites and social media pages, without which the scheme simply does not work," said Shmavonian.

According to him, criminals leave these traces not by mistake, but because of technological necessity. For mass phishing calls, they need SIM cards registered with fake persons, which is recorded by telecom operators. Every transaction with money is reflected in the banking system, and phishing sites have unique IP addresses and domains, all of which become available for monitoring.

By collecting disparate information into a single database, law enforcement agencies can move from responding to single incidents to systematic analysis and effective counteraction to fraudsters.

"Digital footprints make it possible to identify the entire criminal chain and develop countermeasures to protect users," the expert concluded.
