Ryabkov warned of the risk of a clash of nuclear powers due to NATO policy
The policy of the NATO countries creates serious risks of a direct clash between the nuclear powers and hinders a constructive dialogue on disarmament. This was stated by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov.
"Among the relevant negative factors, we highlight the hostile policy of the NATO countries, which can lead to a head—on clash of nuclear powers," Ryabkov said at a meeting in the framework of the webinar series "History and Modernity of Russian Nuclear Policy and Public Diplomacy in the nuclear field," organized by the Center for Energy and Security with the support of the Presidential Grants Foundation.
The deputy minister noted that the West continues to implement destabilizing programs, including the development of joint nuclear mission schemes, the expansion of the US nuclear presence in Europe and the creation of a global missile defense system. Ryabkov also pointed to the plans of the United States and its allies to launch weapons into space.
According to the diplomat, these actions force Russia to take compensating military-technical measures. He stressed that calls for accelerated nuclear disarmament without taking into account the real military-political situation are unrealistic.
Earlier, on October 22, Russian Ambassador to France Alexei Meshkov declared the dominance of the United States in NATO policy. The diplomat noted that, despite the historical traditions of France's independence since the time of the first president Charles de Gaulle, the country does not have a decisive influence on the policy of the alliance. According to Meshkov, even France's nuclear potential remains under national control, but this does not change the overall balance of power in NATO.
On October 19, Russia's Permanent Representative to International organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov, announced the EU and NATO's readiness to support Kiev to the last Ukrainian.
