Sergei Leonov, head of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, said that medical databases are being integrated with the Interior Ministry's systems to promptly respond to contraindications to driving. What is known about the new rules

On March 1, 2027, the law on automatic cancellation of a driver's license will come into force if medical contraindications are found. According to Deputy Sergei Kolunov, when dangerous diseases, including mental disorders, are detected, information is immediately entered into the registry, and the driver is required to undergo an unscheduled examination. Refusal of the examination will lead to the automatic cancellation of the rights with the notification of the citizen.

At the same time, from January 1, 2026, the automatic renewal of driver's licenses, introduced in 2022, will cease. Turgunboy Zokirov, an assistant at the Moscow State Law University's Department of Administrative Law, clarified that drivers whose licenses expire after January 1, 2026, need to independently monitor the validity of their documents. Previously, automatic renewal was valid for certificates expiring before December 31, 2025.

What are the consequences for drivers?

The head of the law firm, Victoria Shabanova, explained that the revocation of rights entails a ban on driving a vehicle. A trip after cancellation is equivalent to driving without a license with a fine of 5 to 15 thousand rubles under Article 12.7 of the Administrative Code of the Russian Federation. To restore the rights, it will be necessary to repeat the entire medical procedure and obtain appropriate conclusions.

The expert warned that professional drivers who will be immediately suspended from work will have special problems. The most likely difficulties will be misdiagnoses and technical errors during data transmission. In such cases, Shabanova recommends contacting a doctor to find out the reasons, undergo a medical examination and, if necessary, challenge the decision in court.

What additional changes are being prepared?

The State Duma Committee on Health Protection is developing a list of medicines, the use of which will be the basis for revoking a driver's license. Sergey Leonov said that the list will include sleeping pills, sedatives and other drugs that affect concentration. The fine for driving under the influence of such drugs can reach 45 thousand rubles with up to two years of disqualification.
