- FT has learned about the US offer of access to weapons-grade plutonium to energy companies
The United States has offered energy companies access to 19 metric tons of weapons-grade plutonium for conversion into fuel for nuclear reactors. This was reported on October 21 by the Financial Times (FT) newspaper with reference to a document from the US Department of Energy.
"The United States has offered energy companies access to nuclear waste that they can recycle into fuel for modern reactors...> It is expected that at least two companies — Oklo, which is supported by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and the French [company] Newcleo — they will apply for access to the state reserves of plutonium," the material says.
This step, as noted in the newspaper, is part of the efforts of the administration of US President Donald Trump to support the US nuclear industry and reduce dependence on Russian uranium supplies. Providing access to nuclear waste will allow them to be processed into fuel for modern reactors, which also contributes to an increase in nuclear resources in the country, the publication says.
Earlier, on October 8, deputies of the State Duma (State Duma) at a plenary session decided to denounce (terminate) the intergovernmental agreement with the United States concerning the disposal of weapons-grade plutonium, which is no longer used for defense purposes. According to Communist Party leader Gennady Zyuganov, plutonium is very expensive to produce and is "one of the main strategic materials" and "Russia's historical advantage."
