Vilnius airport suspended operations due to balloons
Vilnius airport in Lithuania was closed due to the presence in its airspace of dozens of balloons intended for cigarette smuggling. This was announced on October 22 at the National Crisis Management Center (NCMC).
"The work was disrupted due to weather balloons used to smuggle cigarettes from Belarus," the NCMC agency quoted the Reuters news agency as saying.
It is specified that at the moment eight incoming flights have been redirected to various airports.
ABC News reported, citing data from Lithuania's National Crisis Management Center, that Vilnius airport was closed on the night of October 5 due to cigarette smuggling carried out using 25 small balloons. Due to this situation, 30 flights were delayed.
