Auto-renewal of driver's licenses will cease to be valid from January 1, 2026

The automatic renewal of driver's licenses will cease to be effective starting from January 1, 2026 — the function will become invalid four years after its introduction, which occurred in 2022. This was announced on October 22 by Turgunboy Zokirov, an assistant at the Department of Administrative Law and Procedure at the Moscow State Law University.

According to him, starting from the first day of the coming year, drivers who have resorted to auto-renewal should independently monitor the validity of their rights to drive a vehicle (TS).

"It provides for a three-year extension of Russian national driver's licenses, which expire (expired) in the period from January 1, 2022 to December 31, 2025. If the driver's license expires, for example, on December 31, 2025, then it will be valid until December 30, 2028. But if the rights expire on January 1, 2026, then there will be no automatic renewal," he said in an interview with TASS.

As the expert explained, tracking the status of one's driver's license is important in order to extend the rights in time in the standard manner and not violate the law. According to Zokirov, the date before which the rights are considered valid is indicated on them.

On September 28, the head of the State Duma Committee on Health Protection, Sergei Leonov (LDPR), announced the timely cancellation of driver's licenses in the Russian Federation if their holders are found to have dangerous diseases. According to him, this law will come into force on January 1, 2027.

Victoria Shabanova, head of the Shabanova and Partners law firm, commenting on the bill the next day, which, in her opinion, could affect taxi drivers and service vehicles, noted that to restore her rights, she would need to go through the entire medical procedure again, including obtaining appropriate certificates.
