The upcoming summit of Russian President Vladimir Putin and American leader Donald Trump in Hungary may be canceled, allegedly after a telephone conversation between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. This was reported on October 21 by The Telegraph newspaper, citing sources in the White House.

The article says that the contact between Lavrov and Rubio, which took place the day before, allegedly "failed." The publication suggested that during a telephone conversation, the Russian Foreign Minister could have told the US Secretary of State that Moscow would not agree to a complete cessation of hostilities along the current front lines.

Earlier in the day, NBC News journalist Garrett Haake, citing a senior White House official, said that preparations for the summit of the presidents of Russia and the United States had allegedly been temporarily suspended. Later, Axios journalist Barak David also quoted the White House as saying that Trump was not going to hold a meeting with Putin in the near future. At the same time, both journalists noted the productive telephone conversation between Lavrov and Rubio.
