We don't need NATO: the alliance split in one of the most popular video games of the year
The sixth installment of the popular Battlefield action video game series sold over seven million copies in the first three days after its release. This is the best result in the history of the franchise. At the same time, for the first time in the "shooter" there is no traditional antagonist for the series in the person of Russia, which has long become a meme among fans: they say, "evil Russians are selling well." Instead, there is a confrontation between the NATO bloc and former partners who have united in the Pax Armata ("Armed World") PMC. How moving away from hackneyed stereotypes helped the new part bypass last year's launch of Call of Duty, the main competitor of the series, is described in the Izvestia article.
Everything is uneasy in NATO
The Battlefield 6 shooter demonstrates outstanding commercial results, becoming the most successful release in the history of the franchise. According to Electronic Arts, over 7 million copies were sold in the first three days after the game's release, an absolute record for the series. In addition, Battlefield 6 has set a new record for the number of simultaneous players, although the company does not disclose exact figures.
The project has received positive feedback from gaming journalists and from ordinary customers. The multiplayer component and the visual part of the game have received the most recognition. At the same time, the storyline campaign, which tells about the confrontation between NATO countries and the private military corporation Pax Armata, caused a mixed reaction: some players noted its superficiality and insufficient elaboration against the background of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6.
The criticism can't be called fair — the expensive entertainment attraction called the "storyline single-player campaign" in Battlefield 6 lasts about six hours and entertains to the fullest. In fact, this is an impressive return to the single-player gaming experience, which combines cinematography, intense action and a dramatic military plot.
The action takes place in 2027 against the backdrop of the collapse of NATO and the growing threat from the private military company Pax Armata, creating a realistic and tense atmosphere of modern global conflict.
The main characters are fighters of the Dagger 13 elite unit, each of whom has his own character, story and combat specialization. Among them are a stormtrooper, an engineer, a scout, a support officer and a special services agent. This squad structure gives the campaign variety and depth, allowing you to look at events from different points of view and enhancing the player's emotional involvement.
The variety of missions is amazing: from large-scale tank battles near the Egyptian pyramids to street operations in megacities and stealthy landings behind enemy lines. Each episode has a unique rhythm and visual style, which makes the campaign not only intense, but also visually exciting.
Technically, the single-player mode is made at a high level, by the standards of modern Electronic Arts: graphics, destructible environment, battle dynamics and attention to detail create a truly immersive experience. The campaign feels not like an addition to the multiplayer, but as an independent, integral and thoughtful game product, in which each scene works on the atmosphere and the development of the plot.
Battlefield 6 proved that single‑player campaigns are still in demand and capable of surprising. This is a powerful war drama with interactive direction, breathtaking pace and emotional impact, which leaves behind not only memories of battles, but also of the choices that have to be made in a global conflict. A copy of the PlayStation 5 game was provided to the editors by the Achivka distributor company.
An uncertain future
Against the background of this success, information about the sale of Electronic Arts has regained relevance. At the end of September, it became known that the company could be bought out by a consortium of investors for $55 billion. The deal involves Saudi Arabia's Sovereign Wealth Fund, investment companies Silver Lake and Affinity Partners, the latter founded by Jared Kushner and also funded by Saudi Arabia.
Some analysts had already expressed doubts about the feasibility of the sale, pointing out that a strong start to Battlefield 6 could significantly increase EA's market value. The first results of the release only confirm these forecasts. However, the fate of the deal remains uncertain — the final decision has not yet been made, as the shareholders of Electronic Arts have not yet given their approval.
By the way, the game has become popular not only in the world, but also in Russia, despite the lack of Russian language, both voice acting and translated text. The new game in the Battlefield series showed twice the dynamics of disc sales in the Russian Federation in a week from the start than the previous release, Battlefield 2042 in 2021.
This is partly due to the limitations of buying a digital version of the game, because it is easier for customers to buy a CD and start playing immediately than to look for workarounds to purchase content through foreign accounts.
The new game deserves the closest attention. These are two products in one: an ultra-successful competitive game (at the start it had 747,000 simultaneous players) and an exciting, non-protracted storyline. For the first time in many years, Call of Duty will have to, if not move forward, then at least think about the reaction to the actions of a competitor. Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is coming out on November 14th, but there's no guarantee it will repeat the eye-popping sales of Battlefield 6.
