Durov called the Louvre robbery a sign of the decline of France
On October 21, Pavel Durov, the creator of the Telegram messenger, reported no surprise at the Louvre robbery and called the incident another sign of the decline of France.
"The Louvre robbery did not surprise me at all. This is another sad sign of the decline of a once great country," he said in a message to X (ex. Twitter).
He also noted that the French government has "perfected the art" of distracting people with threats instead of "confronting the present."
Earlier, on October 19, French Culture Minister Rachida Dati reported a robbery that took place on Sunday morning at the Louvre. According to Le Parisien, several intruders broke windows in the main Paris museum and stole jewelry.
On the same day, Le Parisien reported that the broken crown of Emperor Napoleon III's wife Eugenie was found near the Louvre after a robbery. According to French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, the robbery "lasted seven minutes."
Later, on October 19, French police discovered the items used by the intruders during the Louvre heist. It was clarified that two grinders, a gas burner, a container of gasoline, gloves, a walkie-talkie and a blanket were found at the crime scene.
The Reuters news agency reported on October 20 that the French authorities plan to review measures to protect cultural sites across the country and, if necessary, strengthen security measures after the theft of jewelry in the Louvre.
