The United States is abandoning the European Union's (EU) plan to expand the use of Russia's frozen assets to provide a loan of 140 billion euros to Ukraine. This was reported by Bloomberg on October 20, citing sources.

"US officials have informed their European counterparts that they will not join this initiative at the moment," the article said.

The agency's sources cited risks to market stability as the reason for the refusal, as well as the US' evasiveness from obligations at this stage.

It is noted that such a step entails a setback for the EU in the issue of cooperation with G7 members on the use of frozen Russian assets to issue loans to Kiev.

The European Commission (EC) is preparing a detailed draft loan mechanism, but will not publish it until EU leaders give their approval. According to preliminary data, this could happen at the end of this week at the summit in Brussels, the newspaper said.

In addition, the US response is also highlighted against the background of renewed efforts by the White House to end hostilities in Ukraine.

Earlier, on October 1, EU leaders unanimously supported the use of frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a loan of 140 billion euros. The EC assured that it had found a "legally justified way" to implement a mechanism in which Kiev would be able to use the funds now.

Then it was claimed that the EC expects to expropriate Russia's sovereign assets frozen in the West by the end of 2025 and direct these funds to military assistance to Kiev. After that, the EC announced plans to use frozen Russian assets worth €25 billion to issue a loan to Ukraine. It was noted that the funds are in private bank accounts throughout the EU.

On October 7, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia would pursue the initiators of the seizure of its assets in the West. He stressed that Russia will use all possible legal tools to protect the country's rights, prosecuting those who have used illegal actions and made decisions that led to the confiscation of assets.
