- The expert named the key criteria for choosing children's shoes for the autumn-winter season.
Proper selection of children's shoes is of great importance for the prevention of serious disorders of the musculoskeletal system, including spinal curvature and chronic joint pain. Denis Batalov, head of the shoe and accessories department of the Lassie brand, told Izvestia about this on October 21.
The specialist recommends observing the optimal amount of space in shoes: for demi–season models, the distance between the toe and the fingertips should be 0.5-1 cm, for winter shoes with insulation — up to 1.5 cm. The sole should bend easily in the front part, repeating the natural movement of the foot when walking. When choosing materials, preference should be given to natural leather or modern membrane fabrics that provide moisture wicking.
"Special attention should be paid to supporting the arch of the foot with a supinator, a special elevation on the inside of the insole. However, an overly pronounced supinator can do more harm than good if the child does not have any special medical indications. Velcro models are suitable for kids to securely fix shoes on their feet, while older children can master shoelaces," Batalov added.
Proper fitting should be done in the evening, when the foot increases slightly in size due to natural swelling. The child should be given the opportunity to walk, jump and sit down in new shoes, paying attention to possible changes in gait. Footprints on the skin after taking off shoes, complaints of fatigue and worn soles indicate the need to replace shoes, which on average are required every four to five months due to foot growth.
The expert also emphasizes the importance of proper care: cleaning with a damp cloth after walking, drying at room temperature and treating with skin protectors. High-quality shoes are considered as an investment in a child's health, since one properly selected pair can prevent the development of problems, the treatment of which will require significant costs in the future.
Earlier, on May 22, Andrey Dzhadzhiev, Deputy Chief of Surgery at SM Clinic, shared with Izvestia the factors that influence the occurrence of postoperative hernias. According to him, the main causes of the formation may be dysplasia (abnormal formation) of connective tissue, low protein levels in the body, as well as excessive physical exertion.
