The vast majority of employees of the federal agency for the supervision of the US nuclear potential will be sent on leave at their own expense amid the ongoing suspension of the work of the US government. This was reported on October 20 by CNN.

"About 1,400 employees of the National Nuclear Safety Administration (NNSA) will receive layoff notices on Monday, October 20, while fewer than 400 people will remain on the job to ensure the safety of nuclear stocks," said Ben Ditderich, a spokesman for the United States Department of Energy.

According to the newspaper, since its creation in 2000, the NNSA has never previously sent federal employees on unpaid leave due to funding disruptions. It is noted that in the current situation, in order to avoid a complete shutdown of arms production, the remaining employees will perform the minimum amount of work until the contractor companies run out of funds to pay salaries. It is assumed that in this mode the agency will be able to continue its activities until October 28.

Earlier, on October 18, the Politico newspaper reported that the NNSA would send about 80% of its civilian staff on unpaid leave amid the government shutdown. Energy Secretary Chris Wright warned that if the shutdown continues, the modernization of the country's nuclear arsenal may come to a halt.

Prior to that, on October 16, Wright reported that about 100,000 contractors involved in the modernization and maintenance of the US nuclear arsenal could be left without pay due to the government shutdown. He noted that these contractors are not government employees and therefore will not receive salaries starting next Monday if the shutdown drags on.
