French President Emmanuel Macron met with former President Nicolas Sarkozy before he went to prison. This was reported by the newspaper Le Figaro on October 20.

"Macron publicly commits to remain silent (on the Sarkozy case — Ed.), but this did not prevent the head of state from speaking out behind the scenes. A few days before Nicolas Sarkozy was imprisoned <...>, the former head of state was secretly received at the Elysee Palace," the article says.

According to the newspaper, the meeting between the current president of France and the former head of state lasted about an hour. During the conversation, Macron expressed support for Sarkozy, although he has not yet spoken publicly about the ex-president's case.

An anonymous source told Le Figaro that during the conversation, Macron stressed that although France effectively protects current presidents, similar guarantees do not apply to former heads of state or candidates for this post.

Earlier, on October 18, it was reported that former French President Sarkozy would serve his sentence in solitary confinement. On September 25, a Paris court sentenced former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison in the case of illegal Libyan financing of his election campaign.
