Russia will take measures for each country separately in case its frozen assets are used by the European Union (EU). This was announced on October 20 by Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto.

"Steps are being taken towards using the so-called frozen Russian assets. Of course, we consulted on this issue, and the Russian side replied to us that based on an assessment of the situation in each [EU] member state, retaliatory measures would be taken if such a decision was made," the minister said at a press conference.

In addition, Szijjarto added that this situation once again underlines the extreme danger of the European Union's access to frozen Russian assets.

The day before, the newspaper Politico reported that the European Commission plans to use frozen Russian assets worth €25 billion to issue loans to Ukraine, the funds are in private bank accounts throughout the European Union (EU) bloc.

On October 16, it was reported that the EC expects to expropriate Russia's sovereign assets frozen in the West by the end of 2025. European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius noted that this money will be used for military assistance to Kiev. According to him, Ukraine will become a key military partner of Brussels in the coming years.

On October 7, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted that Russia would pursue the initiators of the seizure of its assets in the West. He stressed that Russia will use all possible legal tools to protect the country's rights, prosecuting those who have used illegal actions and made decisions that led to the confiscation of assets.

Prior to that, on October 1, EU leaders unanimously supported the use of frozen Russian assets to provide Ukraine with a loan of 140 billion euros. The EC assured that it had found a "legally justified way" to implement a mechanism in which Kiev would be able to use the funds now.
