Thai Foreign Ministry says the country's security for Russians
Thailand remains a safe place for Russians and other foreign visitors, despite cases of abduction of Russian citizens in order to take them to Myanmar for forced labor in criminal call centers. This was announced on October 20 by the kingdom's Foreign Ministry.
"Thailand remains a safe and welcoming destination for tourists from all countries, including Russia. We pay great attention to the safety and well-being of all visitors, and the authorities maintain safe conditions in all popular tourist areas. To ensure the safety of tourists, they are strongly advised to rely on official sources of information and exercise caution before resorting to any services or accepting any high-paying job," TASS quoted the text of the message.
According to the representative office, Russians are in fourth place in terms of the number of visits to Thailand in 2025. It is noted that since 2024, 1.48 million Russians have visited the country, and the total number of tourists from Russia has increased by 18%. It is expected that Thailand will soon receive up to 2 million Russians, which will be a historical record for the number of visits.
Earlier in the day, a Thai police station reported that about 20 Russians had been detained on Phangan Island for several days, mostly for visa violations. The police officer clarified that most of the arrests were carried out by the immigration police for visa violations, however, according to him, there are also many who were detained by "criminal or tourist police on criminal charges."
Prior to that, on October 13, Ilya Ilyin, head of the consular department of the Russian Embassy in Thailand, reported that several Russians had been detained in a fraudulent call center on the border of Myanmar and Thailand. Ilyin said that the organizers of fraudulent call centers in Myanmar lure Russians into slavery by offering them a career as models or advertising agents in Thailand. Most of the time, victims do not realize that they are already in Myanmar, as their phones are being taken away and information about their location is being hidden.
