The Chinese authorities are borrowing the American strategy in countering the United States in the framework of the trade war. This was reported on October 20 by ABC News.

"China likes to condemn the United States for extending its powers too far beyond its borders, making demands on non-American companies. But when Beijing tried to retaliate against US interests this month, it did the same," the article says.

According to ABC News, the Chinese authorities have expanded the rules for the export of rare earth metals. Beijing has announced that it will require foreign firms to obtain Chinese government approval for the export of magnets containing even small amounts of rare earth materials of Chinese origin or manufactured using Chinese technology.

"This rule gives China control over virtually the entire global economy in the technology supply chain," said United States Trade Representative Jamison Greer.

According to the authors of the article, China is borrowing from a long-standing American policy: the foreign direct supply rule.

On October 10, US President Donald Trump announced the US's readiness to impose increased duties on goods from China in response to Beijing's decision to restrict exports of rare earths. In addition, the United States may limit the supply of software to China, as well as many other goods, including airplanes.

Later, on October 12, US Vice President Jay D. Vance announced Trump's readiness for a reasonable approach in negotiations with China. According to him, the American leader is ready to consider all possible options and will resolutely defend the interests of the state.
