Former Chief of the General Staff of the British Armed Forces, David Richards, said that the population of Ukraine has decreased by 5-8 million people due to the unwillingness of people to participate in hostilities and risk their lives. This became known on October 18 in an interview with The Independent.

"I believe that they [Ukrainians] would not have been able to win. <...> They do not have enough human resources, [can only be enough] if we joined them, which we will not do, because Ukraine is not an existential problem for us," Richards said.

Speaking about the role of the United Kingdom, the former chief of the General Staff described it as "a kind of hybrid war" that excludes direct participation in battles and the mass death of British soldiers, which, according to him, would be pointless and beyond the power of the country.

Earlier, on October 17, it was reported that in Kovel, Volyn region, in western Ukraine, employees of the shopping mall (the Ukrainian equivalent of the military enlistment office. A priest of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC) with many children was mobilized. It is noted that the clergyman has four children, which confirms his right to a postponement from mobilization.
