Hundreds of mourners suffered various injuries as a result of a stampede at a stadium in the Kenyan city of Kisumu during a farewell ceremony for former Prime Minister and opposition leader Raila Odinga. This was reported by the Standard newspaper on October 18.
"Rescuers reported that they had taken out more than 100 injured people from the stadium," the publication says.
According to the newspaper, some people lost consciousness from fatigue and stress. Kenyan Red Cross staff provided first aid to the injured on the spot and sent those with more serious injuries to hospitals, the newspaper added.
Odinga died in India from cardiac arrest at the age of 80 on the morning of October 15. The next day, his body was flown on a special flight to Nairobi. The funeral is scheduled for October 19 in Bondo, 65 km from Kisumu, where Odinga was from. The Standard clarifies that Odinga was popular in Kenya, and people call him father at parting.
