Venture Global discussed new LNG supplies with Ukraine before winter
The American company Venture Global has held talks with Ukraine on the sale of additional shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its Plaquemines LNG plant in Louisiana. This was reported on October 17 by the Reuters news agency, citing sources.
According to the newspaper, the discussions took place against the background of the deteriorating state of the Ukrainian energy infrastructure.
"Ukraine had to increase gas imports due to disruptions in its own production," the agency's interlocutors said.
Negotiations were held with the energy company DTEK, which already has an agreement with Venture Global on the supply of undisclosed volumes of LNG from the same plant, as well as contracts for 2 million tons per year from the company's third hub, CP2, which is under construction.
Venture Global CEO Michael Sabel was part of the American delegation that met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington on October 17. The Ukrainian leader stressed the need to expand energy cooperation with the United States.
Venture Global is one of the largest LNG suppliers in the United States and the only operator with significant reserve capacity. The Plaquemines LNG plant, capable of producing up to 27.7 million tons per year, is at the stage of commissioning, which allows the company to actively sell fuel on the spot market.
Earlier, on October 11, the head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Energy, Alexei Kucherenko, said that the Ukrainian authorities intend to delay the start of the heating season due to gas shortages. According to him, fuel reserves are limited, and recent strikes on mining facilities have only worsened the situation. Postponing heating is considered as a necessary measure to save resources in winter.
