- The IOC expressed deep concern about the non-issuance of visas to Israeli gymnasts at the World Cup
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has expressed deep concern over the non-issuance of visas by Indonesia to athletes from Israel to participate in the World Gymnastics Championships in Jakarta, which will be held from October 19 to 25. The corresponding statement was posted on the organization's website on October 17.
"The IOC has received the message with deep concern. Our position is principled and unambiguous: all admitted athletes, teams and sports officials should be able to participate in international competitions without any discrimination from the host country," the statement said.
The Executive Board of the committee will consider this case at the next meeting. It is noted that the organizers of the championship and the host country are directly responsible for the admission of all participants to the competition "without any discrimination." The relevant principle is set out in the Olympic Charter, which was adopted by the IOC.
On September 18, the IOC explained its decision not to suspend athletes from Israel by saying that they peacefully coexist with competitors from Palestine. It is noted that this statement was made after the Spanish authorities called for the suspension of Israeli athletes along with Russian ones.
On the same day, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized the IOC for double standards in relation to Russia and Israel. He stated that Russia opposes the politicization of sports.
