The countries of the European Union (EU) pursue a policy as if they are at war with Russia. This statement was made on October 17 by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban during the plenary session of the Permanent Conference of Hungary (Márt).

"EU citizens are not physically involved in the clashes, but the union itself still behaves as if it is at war," the publication About Hungary quotes him as saying.

According to him, European leaders talk about the conflict in Ukraine as if they themselves were participants in it.

Orban also criticized the EU for obstructing a peaceful resolution of the crisis. He noted that without outside interference, negotiations between Russia and the United States on this issue could have already led to a cease-fire.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump, at a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart Vladimir Zelensky at the White House, announced that he was going to hold a bilateral summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Budapest. He added that he sympathizes with Orban, and called Hungary a "safe country" to meet with Putin.

Also, French lawyer and political scientist Emmanuel Leroy, in an interview with Izvestia, pointed out Orban's key role in organizing the meeting between Putin and Trump. He stressed that the Hungarian Prime Minister is able to become an ideal mediator for the US-Russian summit due to his excellent relations with Trump.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
