Two comets burned up in the solar atmosphere with an interval of several hours. This was announced on October 17 by the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy at the Institute of Space Research (IKI). RAN in his Telegram channel.

On October 10 and 11, LASCO space coronographs recorded a rare event — two comets burned up in the solar atmosphere within a few hours of each other. According to scientists, these objects belong to the oldest bodies of the Solar system.

"Comets were born from a primordial gas-dust cloud during the formation of the solar system and represent some of the oldest bodies, some of which may be older than the Sun," the publication clarifies.

Astronomers suggest that the two burnt-out comets were most likely born together and may be two fragments of a single large comet that was destroyed after a collision with an unknown object.

Earlier, on October 17, it was reported that on Tuesday, October 21, comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) will reach the point of maximum approach to Earth, becoming the brightest autumn object of its kind. According to the astronomer, such brightness will allow observing a celestial body through binoculars or an amateur telescope, and in clear weather conditions — even without special instruments.

All important news is on the Izvestia channel in the MAX messenger.
