The feeling of a foreign body or sand in the eyes is a common complaint that patients come to the ophthalmologist with. Svetlana Mirgorodskaya, an ophthalmologist at SM Clinic, told Izvestia on October 20 about why this unpleasant symptom may appear.

According to the expert, along with the feeling of sand, burning, dryness, redness and a feeling of eye fatigue are usually noted. These symptoms are usually associated with inflammation or irritation of the mucous membrane of the eye, most often due to dry eye syndrome.

"The development of this syndrome may be associated with a violation of the composition or amount of tear fluid. The causes of this pathology can be different: malfunction of the meibomian glands, inflammation of the tear ducts, hormonal changes or prolonged visual stress, for example, when working in the office," Mirgorodskaya explained.

Contact lenses often cause unpleasant sensations when they violate the rules of wearing, storing or handling them.

Similar symptoms are observed in infectious or allergic eye diseases such as conjunctivitis, blepharitis and keratitis. In such cases, itching, redness, lacrimation and hypersensitivity to light are added. In addition, the feeling of sand in the eyes may be associated with lagophthalmos, a condition in which the eyelids do not close completely.

According to the ophthalmologist, sometimes the cause of discomfort lies in the side effect of certain medications — eye drops, antihistamines or hormonal drugs. Unpleasant sensations can also be caused by dust, small particles, or micro-damage to the surface of the eye.

"If the feeling of sand does not go away for several days, it is important not to self-medicate, but to consult an ophthalmologist. Only a doctor will be able to accurately determine the cause and choose an adequate treatment," Mirgorodskaya emphasized.

She added that timely diagnosis helps to avoid complications, preserve eyesight and prevent the development of chronic eye diseases. Regular routine checkups are especially important for those who spend a lot of time behind the screen, use lenses, or often experience eye fatigue.

On September 24, Igor Aznauryan, a pediatric ophthalmologist, MD, professor, founder and head of the Association of Children's Eye Clinics "Clear Gaze", spoke about the signs of visual impairment in a schoolboy. It was clarified that with the beginning of the school year, the visual load on children increases dramatically, which poses a serious threat to vision, which is especially vulnerable at school age.
