In the context of the diplomatic situation, the meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump in Hungary looks like a gesture by the United States towards Europe. This opinion was expressed by political analyst Alexander Asafov in an interview with Izvestia on October 17.

"Hungary, first of all, is a gesture by Trump towards Europe, which does not agree with him on everything as he would like," he said.

Moreover, Asafov stressed that Hungary was not chosen by chance: the country actively supports Trump's policy, despite disagreements with other European states.

At the same time, the visit to Hungary demonstrates the support of the country's Prime Minister Viktor Orban. The meeting may also become an element of pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, despite the possible symbolism associated with the Budapest Memorandum, the expert said.

"Apart from the conflict in Ukraine, I think we should look at the composition of the delegations. The trip may be extensive: it may concern, for example, cooperation in the field of nuclear, nuclear technologies and a host of other areas," the political scientist added.

After talks with Putin on October 17, Orban announced that preparations for the US-Russian summit in Hungary were underway at full capacity.

On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Hungary and called the phone conversation with the Russian president productive. He later stated that he hoped to hold the summit within two weeks.
