Nicola Canestrini, the lawyer of Ukrainian Sergey Kuznetsov, accused of blowing up the Nord Stream and Nord Stream—2 pipelines, in a conversation with Izvestia on October 17 called the reaction of the Ukrainian government to the court proceedings surrounding his citizen strange.

"It seems to me extremely strange that the Ukrainian government has completely turned its back on its own soldier. We are talking about a former captain of the Ukrainian army," the lawyer said.

Canestrini added that Ukraine must clearly state whether the attack was a military operation authorized by high-ranking officers or not. In the first case, as the lawyer pointed out, the state is responsible for the actions of its soldiers.

"The fundamental principle says: the state is responsible for the actions of its soldiers, committed by order. And if there were no such orders, we need to find out whether the Ukrainian army participated in this operation or not," Canestrini stressed.

According to him, after the complaints were filed, Ukraine reacted only at the bureaucratic level, signing papers, which "looks strange." In addition, the lawyer indicated that Germany is aware of the details of the alleged operation.

Earlier in the day, Canestrini announced that a retrial on Kuznetsov's extradition to Germany would be held on Thursday, October 23. The lawyer added that the refusal to transfer could be justified by a number of violations related to the rights of the accused to a fair trial. He noted that the main argument is the denial of access to the case file in Germany.

Kuznetsov was detained in Italy at the request of Germany, where he was accused of organizing the explosion of the Nord Stream gas pipeline. According to the investigation, he allegedly led a group that planted explosive devices. In September, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova pointed to Germany's contradictory position on the case and the lack of expulsion of Ukrainian diplomats from the country.

On October 16, an Italian court overturned the decision to extradite Kuznetsov to Germany. Canestrini then noted that the court agreed with the defense's arguments about the violation of the rights to participate in the trial due to an error in the legal qualification of the facts contained in the European arrest warrant.
