Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio will hold telephone talks on Friday, October 17. This was stated at a press conference by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto.

"Yesterday, my Russian colleague informed me that he would have a telephone conversation with an American today, to whom [US President] Donald Trump offered to lead the preparations for negotiations from the American side," RIA Novosti quoted him as saying.

On the same day, Szijjarto said that a telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban was scheduled for Friday at 12:00 Moscow time and should already be underway. In addition, the Hungarian Foreign Minister said that he had a conversation with Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov in preparation for the Russian-American summit.

Prior to that, Orban announced his intention to hold a telephone conversation with the Russian leader on Friday, October 17. He also noted that he had had a conversation with Trump the day before and stressed that on Thursday, October 16, he had instructed the creation of an organizing committee for the preparation of the Russia–USA summit.

On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Hungary and called the conversation with the Russian leader productive. He later stated that he hoped to hold the summit within two weeks.
