US President Donald Trump has announced a new meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which may take place in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The leaders of the two countries agreed to meet on neutral territory to discuss the settlement in Ukraine and other important issues. On the eve of the summit, Izvestia collected information about Hungary, as well as the country's role as a mediator and the development of Russian-Hungarian relations.

Hungary: geographical location and political structure

Hungary is a Central European country with an area of 93,030 square kilometers and a population of about 9.7 million people. The country is located in the very center of Europe and borders such states as Slovakia, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Romania and Ukraine. This makes Hungary an important transit and political hub in European politics.

The capital of Hungary is Budapest, an important political, economic and cultural center of the country. The city is located on the Danube River and consists of two parts — Buda, the western part, famous for its hills and historical sites, and Pest, the eastern part, where administrative buildings and modern residential areas are concentrated.

The majority of the country's population are Hungarians, accounting for about 90%. The country is also home to various national minorities, including Gypsies, Germans, Romanians, Croats, Serbs, Poles, Ukrainians, as well as a significant Jewish community. The official language is Hungarian, which belongs to the Ugric group of the Finno—Ugric branch of the Uralic language family. The main religion is Catholicism, and the Roman Catholic Church is represented here by four major metropolitans.

According to its political structure, Hungary is a parliamentary republic with limited power of the president, who is elected for five years. Since March 5, 2024, this post has been held by Tamas Shujok, who replaced Katalin Novak, the first female president in the country's history. The most important figure in the country is the Prime Minister, who heads the Government and represents the country in the international arena. Since 2010, this position has been held by Viktor Orban, leader of the FIDESZ party.

Hungary has membership in the European Union (EU) and NATO — the country joined the alliance in 1999. However, the state is known for its independent policy, which often opposes the official line of its European partners.

Hungary's mediation in the settlement in Ukraine

From the very beginning of the Ukrainian crisis, the Hungarian leadership has expressed its willingness to act as a mediator in its settlement. In July 2024, Orban stated that the desire to achieve a settlement would be the main task of Hungary as the EU presidency. The Prime Minister personally initiated meetings with the leaders of Ukraine, Russia and China to find ways to resolve the conflict peacefully.

In 2024, Orban organized several high-level meetings, including with Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as well as with Vladimir Zelensky in Kiev. In the same year, he visited Beijing, where he spoke with Xi Jinping. He was very enthusiastic about the proposal to hold a meeting of the leaders of Russia and the United States in Budapest. According to him, the organization of the summit in the Hungarian capital has already begun.

It is expected that during the summit, ways to resolve the Ukrainian crisis peacefully will be discussed, as well as possible supplies of American long-range Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine, which Trump has allowed in the last month and a half.

By the way, Budapest was considered as a new venue for a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump back in the summer of 2025, when information about the first summit of the two leaders appeared. Nevertheless, at that time it was held on American territory, in the state of Alaska.

Diplomatic relations between Russia and Hungary

Diplomatic relations between Hungary and Russia were established on December 6, 1991. They continue to develop within the framework of the Treaty on Friendly Relations and Cooperation, signed in the same year and ratified by the Russian Parliament in 1995. Hungary traditionally adheres to a pragmatic approach in its foreign policy, maintaining both close relations with Russia and close cooperation with the European Union.

Hungary actively cooperates with Russia in various fields, including energy, agriculture, healthcare and culture. One of the most striking examples of successful cooperation is the construction of the second stage of the Paks nuclear power plant, where Russian specialists play a key role. Trade between the two countries also continues to develop, especially in the supply of hydrocarbons and agricultural products.

Hungary's cooperation with other countries

Hungary actively participates in international organizations, including the UN, NATO, the EU and the Schengen area. However, she also demonstrates her independence in making foreign policy decisions. The country maintains diplomatic relations with more than 150 countries and plays an important role in ensuring security and stability in Central Europe.

Against this background, Hungary often acts as a mediator in international negotiations, which is also confirmed by its participation in resolving the Ukrainian crisis and organizing a possible meeting between Putin and Trump. The country provides its territory for peace talks, which demonstrates its strategic importance as a platform for diplomatic efforts.
