On October 17, Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs called the summit of Russia and the United States in Budapest "historic."

"Great news for peace-loving countries! The government is ready to hold a historic meeting," Kovacs wrote on Facebook (owned by Meta, a recognized extremist organization and banned in the Russian Federation).

This statement was a comment on his own post about the upcoming talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump on the settlement of the situation in Ukraine.

On October 16, Trump announced a meeting with Putin in Hungary and called the phone conversation with the Russian president productive. He later stated that he hoped to hold the summit within two weeks.

As Russian Presidential aide Yuri Ushakov noted, the conversation itself took place at the initiative of Putin, who began the conversation by congratulating Trump on the success of his work to normalize the situation in the Gaza Strip. It is noted that Trump mentioned Budapest as a meeting place with Putin, who in response supported this choice.

Later, the Axios portal reported that the telephone conversation between Putin and Trump came as a surprise to the President of Ukraine, Vladimir Zelensky. The statement by the American president about the talks with Putin and the upcoming meeting in Hungary took the Ukrainian delegation by surprise.
