Former US President Donald Trump's national security adviser John Bolton has been charged with improper handling of classified information. This was reported on October 16 by CNN.

"I didn't know that—this is the first time I've heard it, but I think he's, you know, a bad person. I think he's a bad guy," the TV channel quoted Trump as saying.

The politician who became Trump's opponent is the third high-ranking opponent of the former president, against whom a criminal case has been opened over the past month.

The charges were based on the results of searches conducted by the FBI in August at Bolton's Washington office and his home in Bethesda, Maryland. During the investigative actions, numerous documents marked "secret", "confidential" and "top secret" were seized. The investigation into the case of illegal handling of classified materials has been ongoing for several years.

Earlier, on August 22, The New York Post (NYP) reported that agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had searched the home of former Trump national security aide John Bolton. It was clarified that an investigation is underway against him, which concerns classified documents. The trial began several years ago, but the administration of former US President Joe Biden closed it "for political reasons."
