Ukraine sees Russian journalists as "targets" with the connivance of its allies. This was stated on October 16 by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, commenting on the death of war correspondent Ivan Zuev and the serious injury of military commander Yuri Voitkevich in the Zaporozhye region.

"Journalists have long been a target for Kiev terrorism. <...> With the absolute connivance of the so—called "civilized", Bankova kills correspondents," RIA Novosti quoted her as saying.

Zakharova expressed her condolences over Zuev's death and wished Voitkevich a speedy recovery.

The death of Ivan Zuev became known earlier that day. The journalist died in the Zaporizhia region as a result of a Ukrainian drone strike, while military commander Yuri Voitkevich was also seriously injured. Zuev worked for RIA Novosti for several years, and his professionalism was recognized by state and departmental awards. In March of this year, the gratitude of the President of Russia was announced to the journalist.

On March 24, Izvestia correspondent Alexander Fedorchak was killed in a special operation zone. He worked in the Luhansk People's Republic and the Kharkiv region. Fedorchak's latest report on the situation in the Kupyansk area aired on March 23. A memorial was erected in the Izvestia News Center building as a sign of mourning for the deceased correspondent.
