- The head of Rosseti named the current trends in the electric power industry for Russia at the REN
The construction of data centers, urban development, and the digitalization of the population are among the main factors driving global electricity consumption. Andrey Ryumin, the head of the ROSSETI Group, said this during a speech at the plenary session of the Russian Energy Week forum, which was opened by Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"Many experts say that we are entering the "era of electricity." One of the main factors stimulating power consumption is the construction of powerful data centers. The development of cities and agglomerations, the digitalization of the population, and the rapid growth of electric transport are also of great importance. All these global trends are relevant for our country," said Andrey Ryumin.
As an example, he mentioned Moscow, where ROSSETI connects more than 8,000 consumers to the network every year. Among them are residential complexes, enterprises and logistics centers, infrastructure for electric transport and many other facilities. The capacity provided to new subscribers is comparable to the consumption of an entire region, for example, the Kaliningrad Region, Ryumin noted.
The growth in demand for electricity in Russia is also stimulated by the active use of air conditioning systems. Because of this, summer load peaks have appeared in many regions, which often exceed winter ones.
The construction of data centers associated with the development of artificial intelligence, digital services, and cryptocurrency mining also has a major impact on consumption growth. According to Ryumin, ROSSETI provides more than 1 GW of power from the grid to supply data centers, and work is underway on applications for more than 1.5 GW.
During the session, the main energy trends and solutions needed to develop effective responses to emerging challenges were discussed. Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke at the session, and Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin and other officials participated in the discussion.
