CAS for the first time recognized the suspension of Russians as discrimination
For the first time in history, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has recognized that banning Russian athletes from participating in international competitions is discrimination. This is stated in the judges' decision on October 16, according to the law firm Sila Lawyers.
"The CAS has satisfied the appeal of the Russian Table Tennis Federation (FNTR) against the European Table Tennis Union (ETTU), recognizing for the first time that the suspension of Russian athletes was discriminatory," the company's Telegram channel says.
According to the judges, the suspension of the Russians violates the principles of political neutrality and non-discrimination, which are enshrined in both the ETTU Constitution and the Olympic Charter. The CAS recognized that the measure was disproportionate, as other alternatives, such as participation under a neutral flag, were not taken into account.
Russian Sports Minister Mikhail Degtyarev said on September 12 that lawyers for the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) were preparing a lawsuit with CAS in connection with the decision of the Congress of the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF), which decided not to allow Russian athletes to participate in tournaments under the auspices of the organization in the 2025/26 season.
