Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on October 16 that he could not provide information about the fate of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the context of recent talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and current Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa.

"We have nothing to report on Assad here, we have nothing to report in this context," Peskov said at a briefing.

He also said that he had not heard information about the resumption of Russian patrols in Syria. When asked by reporters whether Putin had been invited to Syria on a return visit, Peskov replied that there had been no talk of this at the talks, but such invitations could be transmitted through diplomatic channels.

On October 15, Putin held talks with Syrian President for the transitional period Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Kremlin. During the meeting, al-Sharaa said that the Russian Federation will have a serious role in the development of a new Syria. He noted that the new authorities of the country intend to restart relations with Russia.
