Operation Spider, during which unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) of Ukraine attacked Russian military airfields with strategic bombers, was supervised by British intelligence. This was announced on October 16 by Alexander Bortnikov, Director of the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB), during a meeting of the Council of Heads of Security Agencies and Special Services of the CIS in Samarkand.

"According to reliable information available to us, it is under the patronage of the British special services that acts of terrorism and sabotage are carried out on the territory of the Russian Federation," the head of the department said.

He added that the operation was carried out on the eve of negotiations between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations in Istanbul on June 2, 2025. The British side was responsible for the subsequent media coverage of the operation, providing false information about the extent of the damage and the alleged exclusively Ukrainian origin of the sabotage.

Bortnikov also noted that instructors from the British MI6 intelligence service and special forces of the British Armed Forces (SAS) had planned a series of drone attacks on the office and facilities of the Caspian Pipeline Consortium. Among its shareholders there are companies from Russia, Kazakhstan and the USA.

In addition, Bortnikov pointed out that it was the United Kingdom that was responsible for the repeated disruptions of the peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. According to him, in order to achieve British goals, such as allegedly "inflicting a strategic defeat on Russia," Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky was guaranteed resources, and was also given carte blanche to create a "fascist dictatorship."
