The probability of large asteroids falling to Earth in the near future is close to zero, Svyatoslav Litvinov, associate professor of the Department of Radioelectronic Systems and Complexes at RTU MIREA, told Izvestia.

According to Litvinov, to determine the degree of danger of an asteroid, experts analyze two key parameters: its size and the minimum distance to Earth's orbit. The international scientific community, including Russian institutes, is constantly monitoring and cataloging such objects, the scientist emphasized. The Turin scale is a universal tool for classifying threats. It takes into account the kinetic energy of a possible collision and its probability.

"It is customary to classify objects with a diameter of over 140 meters that can approach the Earth at a distance of less than 7.5 million kilometers as potentially dangerous. Such dimensions are already comparable to the scale of a regional disaster in the event of a fall," Litvinov comments.

At the moment, all known asteroids, including those whose approach is reported in the news, have a zero risk index on the Turin scale, he noted.
