Politico reported on Pistorius' failure to enlist in the German army
In Germany, it is not possible to return to the former form of conscription after German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius expressed his objections to the bill. Politico writes about this on October 15.
The publication notes that the head of the department suspended work on the bill when it was almost completed. The Bundestag intended to consider the document this week, but now it is not obvious that the government will continue to promote even a revised version.
According to the initiative, conscription should be carried out "by lot." In particular, all 18-year-olds in the country are asked to fill out a mandatory questionnaire with an assessment of their health status and willingness to serve. After that, the government proposes to launch a "draw method", according to which the "lucky ones" will be forcibly sent to service.
Pistorius said in an interview with Tagesspiegel that two fundamental provisions should be adjusted before the Bundestag considers the draft. The minister called the draw's problem that it would not be able to meet the needs of the Bundeswehr.
On August 25, the head of the Bundestag Defense committee, Thomas Rwekamp, said that Germany would not be able to cover the needs of Bundeswehr soldiers only through voluntary conscription, as proposed by the head of the German Defense Ministry. According to him, the current draft law on new military service does not yet meet the modern challenges of security policy. The head of the committee also stressed that Germany needs to return compulsory military service, and therefore members of the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) will definitely propose changes to Pistorius' bill.
