- In Romania, a hacker hacked into the prison system and reduced the sentences of 15 people
In Romania, a hacker hacked into a prison's information system and reduced the sentences of 15 prisoners. This was announced on October 15 by the Romanian portal Din Politica.
According to the newspaper, a prisoner from the Targu Jiu correctional institution, who was previously convicted of cyberbullying, was temporarily transferred to the Dej prison hospital. There, he allegedly noticed the credentials (username and password) of a police officer with administrator rights in the administration's computer system.
It is noted that upon returning to Targu Jiu, the prisoner used this information to access the terminals of the prison's information kiosks. By logging in with administrator rights, the hacker gained full access to the IMSweb system, an IT platform used to manage prisoners' data.
According to Din Politica, for three months, prisoners logged into the system daily, where they changed critical data. They shortened their sentences, transferred money between their accounts, changed their conditions of detention, and allowed unauthorized intimate visits.
Earlier, on August 7, hackers gained access to confidential information after hacking the federal electronic database of court cases in the United States. It was reported that there was no information about who was behind the attack — criminal gangs or hackers supported by foreign countries. The hack was recorded in early July and affected the administrative management system of the US courts, which is responsible for the federal database.
