Ginger has a wide range of beneficial properties, but it also has certain contraindications that are important to be aware of. This was announced to Izvestia on October 16 by Acting Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the State University of Education Irina Lyalina.

According to the expert, the healing properties of the root are explained by the content of gingerols, shogaols and zingiberene, substances that give it its characteristic burning taste and aroma, as well as essential oils, vitamins B and C, minerals and antioxidants.

The specialist noted that gingerols help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, which is especially useful for arthritis and chronic inflammatory conditions. Ginger stimulates the production of bile and gastric juices, reduces bloating and improves the motility of the gastrointestinal tract. With regular moderate use, it can reduce muscle and menstrual pain.

"Ginger is particularly effective in combating nausea of various origins, from motion sickness in transport to toxicosis in early pregnancy and the effects of chemotherapy. The combination of essential oils and antioxidants helps strengthen the immune system and fight germs," said Lyalina.

Also, as part of a balanced diet, ginger can help improve metabolic parameters, including lowering blood sugar and cholesterol levels.

However, the expert warned about important limitations. If consumed excessively, ginger can cause heartburn, irritation of the gastric mucosa, and diarrhea. It has a mild anticoagulant effect, so it requires special care when taking blood thinners such as warfarin, as well as before surgery. Pregnant women should limit themselves to small doses — no more than 1 g per day. In rare cases, allergic reactions are possible, including skin manifestations and difficulty breathing.

"Doses of fresh ginger root 1-3 g per day, dry powder 0.5—1 g are considered safe. 2-4 g of the root per serving is usually used to make tea, and 0.5–1 g is enough to combat nausea. When preparing for surgery, it is recommended to stop taking ginger in significant quantities 1-2 weeks after consulting a doctor," the specialist concluded.

On June 23, Olesya Makhova, head of the competence center for the development of plant-based products from Roskachestvo, spoke about herbal products that positively affect hormonal balance, skin beauty and a woman's emotional state. According to the expert, one of the key elements of the diet should be legumes — chickpeas, soy products, beans and lentils.
